Charles L Eades -AKA Charlie

Lavonda Louisa and Charles Eades

Charles was born on March 12, 1903 in Muhlenburg Co. KY. He was the first born to Louis Robert and Nora Wilma Eades. In the 1910 Census he was a 7 yr old living with his parents, sister Anna and brother, Walter. They lived on 6th St in Central City, KY and he was not attending school. The 1920 census shows him 16 yrs old, still at home with sisters, Evelyn and Emma now added to the family. The family was living south of Midland KY, in Muhlenburg Co. He was not in school, cannot read or write and was working for wages as a miner in the coal mining industry.

I haven’t located Charles in the 1930 census but he shows up in 1935, in Tulare CA on October 21 through sherrif’s department arrest records. He was brought in for disturbing the peace and his occupation is listed as cook. In February 1936 he was again brought in to the same location, charged with being drunk. He was working as a laborer and was 32 years old. On May 4, 1937, in Fallon, NV, Charles married Lavonda Louisa Coleman and on July 19 their daughter June Helen Eades is born in Oakland CA. Two years later on July 20, 1939, their son Wayne Eugene Eades was born in Oakland CA. There are other Charles Eades in CA but his wife’s family confirmed that this Charles was born in Kentucky and had the names of his sisters. At some point in doing research they mention speaking to Emma. The clincher is that Wayne’s grandson is a DNA match as my 2nd or 3rd cousin, so that was definitely our Charles.

The 1940 census hasn’t produced Charles either but his wife, Lavonda is still in CA listed as head of household, married, with her 2 yr old and 9 month old. It appears that Charles returned to Kentucky by 1942 when he was living in Ft Knox, Hardin, KY as head of household. On Feb 16, 1942 he registered for the WWII draft and listed his employer as Captain Mitchell, his next of kin in RL Eades. I haven’t found a military record for him. May 11, 1942 he married Beulah Paris Johnson in Muhlenburg Co, KY. They had three sons together; Robert April 1, 1943, William R February 4, 1945 and Walter December 8, 1946. The tale I heard growing up was that he went to the store one day and never came back. I have very little information on these three sons other than birth records.

Charles died Jan 2, 1969 in Toledo Ohio. He’s death record shows him as a widow which makes me wonder if there was a third marriage. Someone did an obituary, buried him and there is a memorial on Find A Grave. Some of the records are not visible to me. This man lead a mysterious life and has been an intriguing story.

The CA son Wayne Eugene is deceased. He had a daughter and she is the mother of my DNA match. The daughter, married and moved to Gatlin TN. The sons from Ky may still be alive. I have a lot of answers and even more questions.
